History and purpose
The biennial series of international Transformations conferences began in 2013 with the Transformation in a Changing Climate conference at the University of Oslo, Norway. From the beginning, this conference series aimed to do something different. It offered a transdisciplinary space for scholars, practitioners and artists working on transformations towards sustainability to come together in dialogue and practice. Conference sessions dropped the traditional academic style of presentations in favor of short presentations, long conversations, and practical workshops. Artistic and creative practice was woven into the program as an integral part of the conference and participants were given opportunities to learn about transformations happening in the host city.
Since then, the conference series has gone from strength to strength. It has explored the challenge of solving problems in the Anthropocene (Sweden, 2015), transformations in practice (Scotland, 2017), learning from transformative action and thinking (Chile, 2019), and how to enable positive tipping points in an uncertain world (online, 2021). Perhaps most importantly, the conferences have triggered the establishment of a Transformations Community with a permanent online presence and a growing program of activities.
The University of Technology Sydney and CSIRO will host the Transformations Conference 2023 in Sydney, Australia. The conference theme is transformative partnerships for a better world.
